In computing, Interactive System Productivity Facility (ISPF) is a software product for many historic IBM mainframe operating systems and currently the z/OS operating system that runs on IBM mainframes. It includes a screen editor, the user interface of which was emulated by some microcomputer editors sold commercially starting in the late 1980s, including SPFPC.

A: This abend was intentionally raised because of an expired IVU password. A customer will only receive this abend if they ignore the 'password expired' message on the primary screen and attempt an IVU function.

ISPF primarily provides an IBM 3270 terminal interface with a set of panels. Each panel may include menus and dialogs to run tools on the underlying Time Sharing Option (TSO). Generally, these panels just provide a convenient interface to do tasks—most of them execute modules of IBM mainframe utility programs to do the actual work. ISPF is frequently used to manipulate z/OSdata sets via its Program Development Facility (ISPF/PDF).

ISPF is user-extensible and it is often used as an application programming interface. Many vendors have created products for z/OS that use the ISPF interface.

An early version was called merely SPF and introduced in MVS system in 1974.[1] Originally this stood for Structured Programming Facility, since it was introduced about the same time as structured programming concepts, but later the name was changed to System Productivity Facility. In 1985 IBM ported ISPF/PDF to its VM/SP operating system, where it was able to use either PDF or XEDIT as an editor.[2]

ISPF can also be run from a z/OS batch job.

ISPF/PDF interactive tools[edit]

When a user signs on to TSO they can start up ISPF/PDF. Through a menuing system this provides them access to many useful tools for application development and for administering the z/OS operating system.

Such tools include

  • Browse - for viewing data sets, partitioned data set (PDS) members, and Unix System Services files.
  • Edit - for editing data sets, PDS members, and Unix System Services files.
  • Utilities - for performing data manipulation operations, such as:
    • Data Set List - which allows the user to list and manipulate (copy, move, rename, print, catalog, delete, etc.) files (termed 'data sets' in the z/OS environment).
    • Member List - for similar manipulations of members of PDSs.
    • Search facilities for finding modules or text within members or data sets.
    • Compare facilities for comparing members or data sets.
  • Library Management, including promoting and demoting program modules.

ISPF as a user interface development environment[edit]

Underlying ISPF/PDF is an extensive set of tools that allow application developers to create panel-driven applications, and a set of guidelines to promote consistent use of ISPF functions. A 'panel' is a character-based 'window' which can encompass all or part of a 3270 session's screen real estate. See Text-based user interfaces.

Most mainframe software vendors used ISPF functions to create their applications, so their tools are similar in appearance and operation to ISPF. Similarly, many installations write their own informal tools that use ISPF services.

ISPF services are generally available to any programmer in the shop, and can be used to write panels for either personal or shop-wide use, writing in either compiled languages such as C, COBOL, PL/I, or interpreted languages such as CLIST and REXX.

ISPF applications can be used to perform so-called 'file tailoring' functions, customisation of specially crafted JCL members called 'skeletons', which can then be submitted as batch jobs to the mainframe.

Editor[edit]

The editor screen is formatted with 2 lines (info & command line) at the top (or bottom -- user choice), a six character line number column in the left margin, and the remainder of the screen width being filled with the records of the dataset being edited. Primary commands (which apply to the whole dataset) such as Find, Print, Sort, etc. are typed in the command line. Line commands (which apply only to specific line(s)) such as copy, move, repeat, insert, exclude, delete, text flow, text split are entered by over-typing the line number fields with a one or two character code representing the command to be applied at that line followed by an optional number which further modifies the supplied command.

The editor has several key features:

  • Context sensitive color highlighting for several languages and file types
  • Code folding via the X or XX...XX(hide) line(s) command & indentation-selective reveals
  • editor macro commands in REXX or compiled languages
  • comparison with another dataset
  • models of ISPF service calls
  • context-sensitive Help available
  • recovery from lost sessions

The editor can also be invoked in a 'view' mode. It behaves like the editor, but does not allow saving the data. Edited files can also be saved under a different name, creating or replacing another file.

ISPF provides the 'editor interface' which lets an application program display arbitrary data in the familiar editor panel. Thus many vendor packages use this familiar interface.

Customization[edit]

ISPF is designed to be customized for each user (a fairly new concept in 1974, when it was introduced).

It supports a set of 24 function keys which, when pressed, execute commands. These are customizable: Each user can replace the default commands assigned to any key with his own preferred command (or series of commands). User settings are stored centrally, so that the user can logon from any terminal and that session will remember their previously-chosen commands for each key. Most Personal computers copied this, and have a set of 12 function keys.Even some defaults have endured: the F1 key triggers a 'help' function on a large number of mainframe & PC programs.

ISPF remembers each user's choices for such things as screen colors & layout, the location of the command line and scrolling preferences. It also remembers the last-used data set names on each panel, so the next time the panel is used the names are already filled in. This is very convenient for mainframe programmers because they frequently work with the same files repeatedly.

PC use[edit]

Many of the early users of PCs were mainframe programmers or users, who were accustomed to and liked the ISPF panel system. This led several companies to create versions of ISPF that run on Windows or Unix PC systems. In 1984 IBM introduced the EZ-VU dialog manager for DOS PCs,[3][4] and later OS/2. The SPF/SE 365 and Kedit editors are still sold currently, and the free SPFlite is currently available.

ISPF for z/OS provides a built-in downloadable client program that can install and run on Windows PCs and UNIX workstations. This client program, called the ISPF Workstation Agent, communicates directly with ISPF on z/OS and provides a point-and-click graphical user interface automatically.

The ISPF Workstation Agent can be used to edit PC based files from the ISPF editor to take advantage of the editor's strengths.

If anyone out there is old enough to remember the ISPF editor on IBM mainframes, then you know what I mean. For the rest of you ...

I am looking for a free editor which allows me to edit only particular columns of a text file (preferably only on a series of contiguous lines).

NotpePad++, Crimson Editor (which seems to be longer in development, alas), and UltraEdit (which is not free, alas), all claim a column mode, but that is only the ability to copy/paste rectangular areas of a text file.

While that is certainly nice, I want to he able to search/replace text and be able to restrict it to a a range or of contiguous columns, preferably also on a range of contiguous lines.

If I want to change all 'beer' to 'fish' between columns 10 and 20, the result would be (changes capitalized).

As a bonus, I would like to also restrict it to certain rows, let's say rows 2 though 4, in which case, the result would be:

Question: does anyone know of a (preferably) free Widows text editor which can do that?

I wrote a custom plugin for you.

You need:

  1. ColReplace – follow the installation instructions below


  • All three products are free.
  • All three products run (only) on Windows.
  • ColReplace can replace based on row and column restrictions.

ColReplace

Plugin for Notepad++ which provides a row and column constrained search/replace feature.
I have never coded in Python before, so the code may not be very pythonic. Any suggestions or improvements are welcome!

Installation

  1. Download ColReplace's repository as a ZIP file: click here and extract the files to an arbitrary location.
  2. Open Notepad++
  3. In the menu click Plugins --> Python Script --> New Script
  4. Choose ColReplace.py as the filename and click Save.
  5. Copy the contents of the extracted ColReplace.py into the file which you just created in step #5.

Usage

  1. In the menu click Plugins --> Scripts --> ColReplace.
  2. The appearing dialogs should be self-explanatory.

The vim editor is able to do this out of the box¹. There is a simple Windows installer for gvim or various builds are available for installation through Chocolaty, cygwin, etc.

Vim is a mode editor, meaning that there are several states the editor window can be in, including insert (where you intput text), normal (where keystrokes activate commands that manipulate the text) and visual (where you can select blocks of text).

Visual mode can select text in one of three ways:

  • Character-wise selects ranges of characters across one or more lines.

  • Line-wise selects whole lines.

  • Column-wise selects a rectangular block of characters bounded by row/column positions.

The latter is activated by moving your cursor over one corner of your rectangle in normal mode and hitting Ctrlv, then moving the cursor to the other corner. At this point you will see the column highlighted.

Next you need to issue a search and replace command that finds matches inside the current (or last) visual selection:

Note that this will match any instances of 'beer' that start inside your selection even if they end outside it. You would anchor both sides of the search in be inside the selection if you did not want this behaviour:

Also note that the leading % in this command tells vim to operate on the whole file. If go straight to command mode (by hitting :) from visual mode, the prompt will be pre-filled out with the prefix :'<,'> which operates on just the selected range. It is fine to use this, but as the search and replace function operates line-wise, you still need to use the %V to actually match inside the selection only.

¹ That does not mean you will be able to just use the editor out of the box. There is an old joke that if you want a good string of random text, sit a non-programmed down with VIM and ask them to quit the editor. If you are not familiar with using vim, it might be worth spending a few minutes with some introductory tutorial so you at least know the basics of how to open, edit, save and quit the editor. The usage paradigm is a bit different than most applications you may use regularly on Windows. It can be very powerful, but take the time to get your head around the basics before attempting the more advanced usage detailed in this answer.

SynWrite editor: if you select column block, from line 2 to line 4, and from col 10 to col 20, you 're able to do Replace-All in this selection. (This is option in the Replace dialog).
